Spring cleaning tips for your home.

Spring as they say, has sprung. We here at The Allen Group want you to capitalize on your need to spring clean. Here are some handy tips for inside and outside of your biggest investment.

  • Clean all light fixtures, and replace burnt-out bulbs with energy-saving CFL bulbs
  • Restore the luster of your door by polishing the hinges and knobs with Nevr-Dull Wadding Polish. Paint or stain the door with a color that stands out, yet also complements the trim and siding. Put out a clean, new welcome mat — and make sure the doorbell works.
  • Snow and cold can wreak havoc on your walkway. With warmer weather approaching, take this time to patch cracks and replace loose bricks and pavers. Rent a power washer or purchase a chemical treatment to clean up embedded stains in concrete, stone or asphalt.
  • Caulk, repair windows, just like cracks, gaps between your windows can let water (and critters) inside. Scrape off any old caulking and replace. Also check any wood trim or sills for signs of decay and repair or replace as needed.
  • Strategically placed plants can conceal unattractive aspects of your house or yard. Place large pots or hanging baskets around the stoop or porch.
  • Prune dead branches, trim back overgrown shrubbery and remove any obstructive plantings
  • Check your gutters and downspouts, Whether you did this in the fall after all the leaves fell or not, there’s a good chance your gutters and downspouts need some care after the buildup of ice and snow
  • Wash siding.
  • Clean or replace welcome mat
  • Clean off your grill and deep clean it, so you can get lots and lots of use over the next few months.
  • If you have any outdoor furniture, wash it, check for loose bolts or tears.

Now for the inside! Have to show the interior some love as well!

  • Clear out expired items from the fridge and the pantry.
  • Blow out pilot lights in gas fireplaces.
  • Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries.
  • Clean, clean, clean! Go deep clean in the kitchen and bathrooms.
  • Remove everything from closets. Sweep and wash closet floor. Put everything back neatly.  Donate items you no longer need.  Try not to store things on closet floor.
  • Open the windows, get some of that fresh air, plus all that extra sunshine might show you a few things that need some cleaning!
  • Check food expiry dates. Clean and organize the pantry!
  • Clean the oven, it’s no fun but imagine the sense of accomplishment!
  • Clean under fridge and stove.
  • Check if grout or caulking need to be cleaned or replaced.

Taking care of your home both inside and out can seem very daunting, but it is good for you, your health, and your home
