The birth of Oklahoma City was a fast one, founded in the land run of 1889 the population of the area went from a few families to 10,000 in a matter of hours. Oklahoma was admitted into the Union in 1907. Livestock is a large part of the history of OKC and the city still features one of the world’s largest livestock markets.

The inner-city areas of Oklahoma City suffered during the 1970s-80s but due to redevelopment efforts begun in the early 1990s the city is enjoying a rebirth. The two largest demographic groups are the Caucasian Americans at 56.7% of the population and those of Hispanic or Latin heritage at 17.2%. The median income per household in Oklahoma City is approximately $43,798, and the median age of residents is 34 years.

Oklahoma City Public Schools is the states largest school district. The school district features several top ranked schools such as the Classen School of Advanced Studies, Belle Isle Enterprise Middle School and the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics. The city features several highly acclaimed schools of higher education including Oklahoma City University, The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, the FAA’s Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center and Langston University.
